Description: Epidermal growth factor (EGF) has a profound effect on the differentiation of specific cells in vivo and is a potent mitogenic factor for a variety of cultured cells. The EGF precursor is believed to exist as a membrane-bound molecule which is proteolytically cleaved to generate the 53-amino acid peptide hormone that stimulates cells to divide. EGF exerts its actions by binding to the EGFR, a 170 kDa protein. Epidermal growth factor is also a key growth factor regulating cell survival. Through its binding to cell surface receptors, EGF activates an extensive network of signal transduction pathways that include activation of the PI3K/AKT, RAS/ERK and JAK/STAT pathways

Description: Insulin like growth factor binding protein 3 (IGF-BP3) is a member of the superfamily of insulin like growth factor (IGF) binding proteins which include six high affinity IGF binding proteins (IGF-BP) and at least four low affinity binding proteins referred to as IGF-BP related proteins (IGFBPrP). The IGF-BP members are cysteine rich proteins with conserved cysteine residues clustered in the amino terminal and the carboxy terminal regions of the molecule. The cDNA sequence encoding the mature human IGF-BP3 is fused to the signal peptide of CD33. Human IGF-BP3 is the major IGF binding protein in plasma where it exists in a ternary complex with IGFI or IGFII and an acid labile subunit.

Description: L13 inhibits proinflammatory cytokine production and stimulates antibody production. It induces proliferation in the human pre myeloid cell line TF1. IL13 has multiple effects on the differentiation and functions of monocytes and macrophages. It suppresses cytotoxic functions and induces changes in the morphology of human monocytes and in the phenotype of human monocytes and B cells by upregulating MHC class II expression. IL13 will also decrease the production of nitric oxide by activated murine macrophages, leading to impaired parasiticidal activity. Human and mouse interleukin 13 share approximately 58% amino acid sequence identity. Although human and mouse IL13 are equally active on human cells, human IL13 is much less active than mouse IL13 on mouse cells. Human IL13 and human IL4 also share approximately 30% sequence homology and have similar biological functions.

Description: Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a member of the neurotrophin family of growth factors that includes NGF, NT3, and NT4. All neurotrophins have six conserved cysteine residues and share a 55% sequence identity at the amino acid level. BDNF is a potent neurotrophic factor that supports the growth and survivability of nerve and/or glial cells. BDNF has been shown to enhance the survival and differentiation of several classes of neurons in vitro, including neural crest and placode derived sensory neurons, dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, basal forebrain cholinergic neurons, hippocampal neurons, and retinal ganglial cells. BDNF is expressed within peripheral ganglia and is not restricted to neuronal target fields, raising the possibility that BDNF has paracrine or even autocrine actions on neurons as well as non neuronal cells. Expression of BDNF is reduced in both Alzheimer's and Huntington disease patients. In addition, functional studies showed that age-associated changes in BDNF-mediated pathways can enhance inflammation and increase myocardial injury after myocardial infarction in the aging heart.
